Array-Based Guided Wave Source Location Using Dispersion Compensation

Abstract An important advantage of guided waves is their ability to propagate large distances and yield more information about flaws than bulk waves. Unfortunately, the multi-modal, dispersive nature makes them difficult use for locating flaws. In this work, we present a method experimental data removing deleterious effects multi-mode dispersion allowing source localization at frequencies comparable those Time domain signals are obtained using novel 64-element phased array processed extract wave number frequency spectra. By an application Auld’s electro-mechanical reciprocity relation, mode contributions extracted approximately variational method. Once have been obtained, each removed via back-propagation techniques. Excepting presence small artifact high frequency-thicknesses, successfully demonstrate robustness viability approach location.
